I Hate Thai Food

I eat almost everything. It is true. There are very few foods I will not eat. There is however one exception. Thai food. I hate it. It is not, "I prefer to not eat it." It is not, "I really do not care for it." It is not, "That just doesn't sound good to me." It is an absolute, unequivocal hatred of the food. I think it may have to do with my first job out of college.

When I graduated from college I wanted to see the world. I had always lived in Southern New Jersey my entire life. I wanted to see what was out there. I took a job with IBM and they sent me to Bend, Oregon for six months. It was weird and surreal in a way. One moment I was in farm town USA, and six hours later I was in a corporate apartment 3000 miles away.

I felt like I needed to push myself. Not be "safe" near family and friends. I wanted to experience a different geography and meet new people. I think all of my "life" in Bend is worth another post, so let me get back to the Thai food. When I was in Bend, I shared a car with another Big Blue employee for the first couple months. He was a unique individual from India. He loved Thai food. And as luck would have it, there was a Thai restaurant in town. At the time I was open minded, wanted to try new things, had the $50 per Diem, and so I would go to lunch there with him so he wouldn't have to eat alone. We went there so many times, and I went through everything on the menu. I came to my first realization. I really hate Thai food. I think it's the spices, the presentation, and flavors. I really do not like it. I mean I really hate it quite passionately.

Last Friday the guy I sit next to at work wanted to go to lunch. So I said I'd go with him where ever he wanted to go. And what did he pick? You guessed it. Thai food. I went there and I figured enough time had passed and maybe I really didn't give Thai food a chance....

On Saturday, after having a really "difficult" sleepless night "gastronomically" I was working things out and then went to sit through a movie I had planned on seeing in a little bit of distress. And the one thought I had 1/2 through Watchmen when my lower intestine started announcing its displeasure in my food choice from the previous day was..."I HATE THAI FOOD...."

I hate Thai food too. GG loves it, it might be his favorite food ever - the spices, seafood, basil... I can't get past peanut butter and fish juice. (One thing I will say, though, Thai tea is delicious.)

Ok, dude, don't eat the Thai food.

But seriously, I love Pad Thai and I only eat it from this one restaurant because everywhere else I've eaten it I've hated it. So maybe I actually hate Thai food except for some very non-Thai flavoured Pad Thai.

I don't know, but now I am hungry.

Real Thai food =/= the crap they pass off for it in the west. Oily, sugary, garbage in comparison.

Thai food: it's as though a committee said "Let's find all the bad flavors that exist, then combine them in ways to highlight their unpleasantness, then use the foulest condiments available, and mix them together into the worst possible cuisine."

If you like Thai food, then just eat dog vomit, or whatever you find in the trash--you won't be able to tell the difference. Throw a little vinegar and sugar on there, boom: Thai food. Dip some shrimp in Jif and you've got Thai food.
Although I find that disgusting peanut sauce is more Indonesian.

Seriously. Liquified peanut butter, vinegar, chilis, sugar. Put some rotten fish, some cabbage, a mango, and you have something that is worse than my feces.

Thank you Lola: "Thai is what evil tastes like to me." I'm going to remember that one, sweetheart, you are spot on.

People who can eat Thai and claim to like it can find anything filthy, disgusting and awful worth eating.

And I've BEEN to Thailand said...

Thai food IS oily, sugary garbage, with some shitty fish juice and hot chilis thrown in. There's very little difference between Thai food in the East and West.
Crap vs. slightly differently prepared crap. Just sides of the same disgusting coin.

Wow, sue you're mad. Quit taking it personally, it's not like you came up with the recipes for all the Thai food.

I can't stand Thai food. I hate all of the flavors. Everything tastes wayyyy too rich, and distinct. It's all the flavorS I hate the most, strong fishy and sweet flavors, weird textures. Etc. The food has no balance.

Most food has a balance of very rich flavor with a very mild flavor, spicy chicken with a mild starch like rice, bread, potatoes, etc. Thai food is like somebody putting all the most intense flavored food with nothing to balance it. It makes me wanna vomit.

I hate Thai food as only someone who has lived there can. I used to love it, which is why I don't trust any foreigner's opinion on the cuisine unless they've lived there among the locals.

And I mean actually among local Thais, nOT downtown BKK with the other expats or on the beaches with the other tourists but in a real Thai neighborhood with real Thai people and real, honest-to-god Thai food. I did for 3 years. You will learn to hate it.

Sue, you are an idiot. Nobody is jealous of Thai food. It is the most disgusting garbage ever created. And it is fish juice, not sauce. A sauce, by definition is thick and flavorful. The fish juice you people use in thai food is watery with rotten fish flavoring added.

I agree!!! 🤢

Sue... NASTY FOOD AND NASTY ATTITUDE!!!

DH, I thought about teaching in Thailand but ummm I don't think so! I would vomit everyday if I had to eat this mess! It has no balance! And whatever that sweet and perfume taste is YUCK!!! The thought of it makes me sick to my stomach!

P Dizzle13 Look up the defintion of sauce and also the "Fish Juice" in Thai is called Nam Pla (fermented fish) not fish juice and J most thai foods are served with rice and most likely the food you like are extremely rich and distinct like bacon and cheese. so maybe if you go outside your comfort zone and try something like a piece of sun dried pork or some krapow you may change your opinion (not trying to be toxic). But as a thai person im used to the flavours and their ingredients.

I fucking hate Thai food. It is definitely the spice blend and how they fail to marinate ingredients and end up just boiling them , absolutely no fucking clue which ingredients + spice should go together in a dish. I am literally good with "ANY" type of dish , except , Chinese or Thai. It is also not the "level" of spice either because I'm good with Mexican , Indian and other kinds of spicy food, it is the Thai and Chinese cuisine that have a way of making a meal soo absolutely disgusting. And finally, NO, I have tried Thai food in best restaurants and asked for chef recommendations, they have always let me down.

NO WAY IS THAI FOOD FOR EUROPEANS OR EVEN AMERICANS Thai Food has to be the most disgusting as far as presentation is concerned, next to Mongolian, Korean, and Japanese. TOO much spice and no flavor, too much crap, and a crap presentation.
One this I have to say about Chinese food- is it all depends on what part of China you eat in. WE have experienced Chinese food in almost every part of China and the best was in Shenzen, the food there was di die for, presentation wise was not European style but the tesets were out of this world. You do have to get a local Chinese friend to take you to their local eating place and order for you otherwise you will end u with crap.
